Planned on-the-Job Managerial Training

Shirine L. Mafi

The problem and the solution. Despite sizable investments in managerial training, the effectiveness of this type of training has often come into question. That is, do employees actually learn information useful for meeting organizational goals? Recent efforts have sought to improve the relevance of managerial training, such as connecting managerial training with business goals in a timely manner. However, most managerial training continues to be conducted in classrooms, detached from the organization and the trainee’s goals. This chapter proposes that managerial training conducted on the job, used in combination with classroom training, and aligned with business goals could improve the overall effectiveness of managerial training. Until recently, planned training on the job has mostly focused on technical training rather than managerial training.
