Generating New Metaphors: Downsizing as Cancer

The problem and the solution. HRD must be careful not to confine itself to known metaphors and instead remain open to transferring metaphors into HRD from other disciplines and to generating new ones. But how are new metaphors generated? This chapter reports on one approach: noticing similarities between unconnected objects. In this particular case, new insights result from the metaphor of downsizing as cancer.
